I was diagnosed with cancer. Do I need a Therapist?

When you were diagnosed with cancer, your first reaction was probably shock and disbelief. When the dust settled a bit, you started to assemble your team:

  • An expert oncologist.

  • Possibly a surgeon or radiologist.

  • Your support system.

But what about a therapist?

When I was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2009, I did not have the thought, “I need a therapist.”  What I did think was, “Right now, I need support, tools to cope with this, resources, and HOPE!”  At that time, I didn’t know that there were therapists who specialized in supporting people with cancer who could provide exactly what I was looking for!

What is a Cancer Therapist?

My clients often come to me feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and scared.  Things in their world feel out of control.  Here are some of the statements that I hear from my clients when we first meet:

“I’ve been through other hard things in my life. I should be able to handle this better!”
or
“If I was just a little bit stronger, I could hold it together.”

But here’s what I want you to know:

If you are struggling to cope with your cancer diagnosis, you are not alone! No matter the obstacles you have overcome before, cancer is just a different experience.

You are not weak! And you are not overreacting! Cancer just really is that hard.

As a Cancer Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and a 12-Year Cancer Survivor, this is what I offer my clients:

  • Guidance

  • Emotional support

  • Tools for Coping

  • Resources

  • Hope and Inspiration!

When cancer impacts your mental health and well-being, you do not have to figure it all out on your own!  Together we will successfully navigate this journey through cancer and cancer survivorship.
